"I photographed the decay of a dinosaur. It was a vast sculpture of wreckage in deafening silence, about to vanish into memory. The dinosaur was a massive disintegrating monument to America's industrial civilization. Bethlehem Steel. Here, in the scorching glow of Bessemer furnaces, the steel was forged to build the Empire State building. To float above the Pacific in the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Hudson, in a bridge they named for George Washington. In those furnaces banked along the Lehigh River, the steel was made for guns on battleships in two World Wars, and if the I-beams of Bethlehem Steel were removed from New York City, 80% of its skyscrapers would fall. A colossal monument to America's industrial age."
